It's summer time and fleas thrive when the weather is warm and humid. Your furry friend will be much more comfortable if the problem is prevented now rather than cured after lots of scratching and fur removal!

Ticks

 

Ticks are most often found around your dog's neck, in the ears, in the folds between the legs and the body, and between the toes.

​

The paralysis tick and the brown dog tick are the two most common ticks on dogs. However, it is the paralysis tick that is by far the most dangerous. It causes paralysis in a variety of forms but a ‘typical’ case starts with weakness of the hindquarters that progresses to total paralysis of all four legs. Other typical early signs include an altered bark and/or vomiting.

Talk to me about prevention. The best treatment available is checking your dog regularly, especially after walks in long grass or in bush areas.

 

Worms

 

The thought of worms is horrible.... that's because they are!

Animals pick up worms in a variety of ways, from other infected animals, their infected mother when puppies, eating feaces or other such nasties and infected raw meat (generally an issue for dogs in rural areas ie dead animals) and a few other ways, but treatment is easy.

​

An annual needle from your vet or a variety of chews and tablets or liquids are available. Keep your pet's area clean and remove waste as regularly as you can.

​

If you are using a monthly product to control heartworm and intestinal worms, it is still important you use an all-wormer tablet at least once every six months and many vets advise an all-wormer is used every two to three months.
